About

Boutwell Schabrowsky is a contemporary art gallery in Munich, founded in 2016 by the Australian-German gallery owner Susan Boutwell. Since 2021, the gallery has been run in cooperation with art historian Marion von Schabrowsky.
Boutwell Schabrowsky is characterised by a cross-generational, international program of exhibitions with a clear conceptual focus: all artists create work with a critical point of view, which reflects the current state of the world. The results are a broad spectrum of media, spanning from painting, ceramics and sculpture to installation and video.
Susan Boutwell’s experience in the international art world and Marion von Schabrowsky’s experience as an art historian creates a dynamic and comprehensive program. They both attach great importance to translate the intention and vision of the artists and their works to all of their patrons.
Marion von Schabrowsky studied art history, architectural history and philosophy at Edinburgh University, Scotland. As a freelance art historian, she has worked for over 20 years in the field of press, mediation and curation for cultural institutions, exhibition venues and corporate clients such as Hypo-Kunsthalle, Louis Vuitton, Cartier, European Patent Office, etc.
Susan Boutwell studied languages and art history at the University of Cologne, Germany, and looks back on a career in the top tier of the international art trade. She started in 1986 in New York City with Pat Hearn, moving to Studio Guenzani in Milan in 1987. In the 1990s, when the international art avant-garde was still largely based on the New York-Cologne axis, she worked at Galerie Jule Kewenig in Cologne until 1994. In 1995, she moved to Sydney, where she owned and directed, together with her then husband James Draper, Boutwell Draper Gallery. The gallery represented young and established Australian artists, as well as showing international artists like Andy Goldsworthy, Ian Hamilton Finlay,  Rioji Koie, Lee Yong Deok and Ulrich Rückriem. Boutwell Draper Gallery was one of the most renowned in Australia at the time.
The exhibition program of Boutwell Schabrowsky Gallery is based on Susan Boutwell’s intuitive approach to artistic talent and her knowledge of the international art market, developed over decades, and her close collaboration with artistic personalities. As a Munich native and well-travelled with a keen eye for quality and trends, Marion von Schabrowsky is committed to excellent communication and bringing people together in a meaningful way within the framework of contemporary art.
