Bilder lesen, Worte malen
Albert Coers & Isabelle Dyckerhoff
20 November 2025 - 7 February 2026
“Bilder lesen, Worte malen” - “Reading Pictures, painting Words” - features artists Isabelle Dyckerhoff and Albert Coers
Albert Coers and Isabelle Dyckerhoff work with different media and concepts. But they share common interests: the relationship between text and image, and the attempt to capture time visually, to manifest time in images.
Can images be read? From left to right and from top to bottom, line by line? Like a book? Can words be painted? Depicted visually? With brush and paint? Like a picture? Can words and images, writing and painterly gestures be combined?
Can one measure time by (or when?) painting a picture every day? Can one measure time by writing a diary? Can one condense time by repeatedly writing over diary entries? By painting over areas of colour? Could one capture time in this way? Preserve it?
Isabelle Dyckerhoff's "90 Days, Brooklyn Diary" was created during her artist residency at ISCP New York in 2015. It can be “read” from top to bottom, from right to left. Each sheet in this series “describes” a day of her artist residency.
She was inspired by Paul Auster's story "Auggie", which she found in the book "New York: A Literary Invitation" (Salto, Wagenbach Verlag, 2014). In it, New York authors describe their neighbourhoods or tell stories from their local areas. Paul Auster is no exception: "Auggie" tells of Brooklyn, cigars and much more, and also forms the basis for the film "Smoke". Ultimately, however, it is a story about time, time and art, and how to measure time by creating a work of art every day.
Albert Coers' photos "Curitiba"were taken in front of a display case in Curitiba, Brazil, during his research for the Thomas Mann family memorial installed in the centre of Munich. Adhesive letters have come loose and fallen off, creating new meanings. Letters become images.
