Natureculture 2024
Julia Lohmann, Chistina Maria Pfeifer, Claudia Terstappen & Veronika Veit
5th September - 15th November 2024
The term “naturecultures” – introduced by the philosopher Donna Haraway - illuminates new ways of thinking at which core lies the inseparability and interconnectedness of all living forms. This modern world view encourages us to reconsider the prevailing human-centred position of societies in favour of a symbiotic culture that restructures the current political and economic systems.
Julia Lohmann, Professor of Contemporary Design at the Aalto University in Helsinki, established the “Department of Seaweed” in 2013. It is an interdisciplinary collective of designers, artists and scientists. Together they are researching seaweed as an alternative material for artistic production and everyday objects.
For “naturecultures2024” Julia Lohmann will create a new work which will be built and installed as part of a performance during the opening. A major work of the artist will be on show in the exhibition “Into the Bubble” with the Künstlerverbund in the Haus der Kunst.
Christina Maria Pfeifer has been exploring scientifically and artistically for many years the fascinating world of fungi. She is particularly interested in observing how fungi and their vegetative part - the mycelium - connect with other living beings and how we draw inspiration from this for a futuristic relationship between humans and non-humans.
Claudia Terstappen is a renown photographer, sculptor and ceramic artist.
Nature is a focus of her art. In her own words: “I want to indulge in nature’s generative forces, powers, beliefs and emotions to reflect on and interpret the outside world and let us see the dependencies between the human race and the natural environment.”
Veronika Veit works in all media. Thematically, they revolve around the contradictory relationship between man and nature.
As part of nature, man is the only being that controls ‘nature’. The associated regimentation and domestication of ‘life’ goes hand in hand with a longing for more closeness to nature, which would quickly vaporise if the campsite had no running water or internet access.
The series of installations on display is fuelled by this tension between nature and culture. They are hybrid beings that oscillate between technical and organic structures.
