Out of the Cave

According to the prevailing belief in Mesoamerican mythology, humans are born in a cave and return there after death. This cave, known as Chicomoztoc, serves as the central place of origin for the spatial symbolism of the experience of birth, the initial encounter with the world and perpetual return.

Sophie Ullrich´s exhibition" “Out of the Cave” takes its cue precisely from this mythologised moment of transition, in dialogue with the photographs of Marko Seifert. In a compelling interplay of painting and photography, the artistic works explore what lies beyond the cave: the world that opens up after the first step into the light.

Thus, inspired by the richness of Mexico City´s flora and colours, a visual language emerges that moves between nature and urbanity. Embedded in a polytheistic worldview, in which gods permeate nature and the cosmos. Leaving the cave becomes a visual strategy for exploring the senses, the desire for change and the continuous discovery of the world.
