The title of the exhibition refers to Pierre Puvis de Chavannes' painting Inter Artes et Naturam, created around 1890. It shows artistically active people in an idealized, sublime landscape. Here the garden functions as an interface between nature and culture, of free and applied art, in a historical sense also as border of this world and the hereafter.

In her graphic works Stefanie Hofer has long been intensively involved with this interrelation between the natural and cultivated world, the garden as a border area, as a place of reflection and a statement on current events.

In this exhibition she shows a series of large-format aquatint works on contemporary European landscape gardens. It mainly refers to the garden Little Sparta by the Scottish artist and poet Ian Hamilton Finlay (1925 - 2006), who created a sharp, ironic and contemporary interpretation of mythological Arcadia with this unusual total work of art.

Hofer's works offer insights into this garden, illustrating how Finlay used specific poetry, sculptures and temple buildings to form his program of neo-classical rearmament in order to declare war on the banalization and secularization of our culture.

The viewer can now enter into a relationship with these places, which have undergone spatial transformations in the artistic process, like a stage set: from the real nature of the garden with its references to time and cultural history to the scenarios of the aquatint works, which show the garden as a setting that, through the focused qualities of spatial depth, light and shadows can be experienced subtly and precisely.
