Stefanie Hofer

My prints show insights into landscape gardens whose creators - artists, poets and architects - come from different cultural contexts. The garden functions here as an interface between nature and culture, between free and applied art, and in a historical sense also as a boundary between this world and the hereafter. It is both a place of reflection and a statement on current events.

I combine materials collected on my travels, sketches, research and sometimes documentary material from archives into a new, idealised pictorial space. Intaglio printing offers me the opportunity to transfer the detailed preparatory drawing to the printing plate and then to rework it using the free, painterly process of the aquatint technique.

The black and white visual language and the play of light and shadow direct the viewer's gaze to the most crucial aspect: the garden is not only experienced as an architectural space, with its statements and references it becomes a setting and - similar to a stage set or a theatre play - a mirror for man in his being and actions.

The garden becomes an open space for interactions and interventions in the visual arts, architecture, theatre, philosophy and language. It combines poetics, aesthetics and play with functionality and everyday reality.

My artistic work resembles a quest for and collection of these successful moments; it is an approach to this great theme, a reminder of the former state of this art and is intended to point to the potential of these gardens to serve as a source of inspiration and ideas for the design of an urban and landscape space.
